Sean McKinven’s Newsround: 25 August

It’s coming up to the end of August and summer is approaching its closing stage. The schools are back in Scotland. Where did it all go?

The end of summer means festival time here in Edinburgh which always brings out a mixture of emotions which range from a sense of cultural pride to, I’M GOING TO SHOOT THIS TOURIST WHY IN GOD’S NAME ARE YOU STOPPING THERE.

We have been largely insulated from it here in Leith, this was made very clear to me on the train home earlier in the week running into my pal who works in the National Museum and the Castle gift shops and her tales from the crypt.

This involved one American tourist, looking out at the bridges, ushering her over whilst pointing at Fife and asking: “Is that Sweden?” Another telling her they’re in line for the Scottish throne owing to their distant relative William Wallace; she decided not to inform them that although he worked very hard fighting the English for independence and murdered a few nuns along the way, he was never a sovereign. Honorable mention to the person who passed comment that Victoria Street had been aged well (they were under the impression that it was built after J.K Rowling created Diagon Alley).

So if any of you are worried about being perceived as typical tourists abroad, you can tell yourselves at least you’re not Americans in Edinburgh.

Anyway, those coming back will need kept up the news. Here’s some stuff I have spotted:

Answering the Call

Service means a lot of things to a lot of different people. It’s so subjective it can be hard to put your finger on. This paper aims to challenge the status quo and inertia that’s built up in the sector for many years.
