Analyser data and QA analyst

ABOUT THE ROLE

Analyser is our Software service platform for advisers and providers to compare investment platforms and discretionary investment managers. People make real decisions using it, so it has to be right. That is where you come in.

Youโ€™ll report to the Head of Product (Analyser) and be responsible for the accuracy of what Analyser says. Youโ€™ll keep the data behind it up to date, maintain relationships with the firms who supply that data, test every change before it goes live, and be the first person to answer when a client or adviser thinks something looks wrong. Youโ€™ll build and look after a library of test cases (real inputs with known correct answers), so that any change to the system, or to where it is hosted, can be checked against it. Youโ€™ll manage and maintain the product specification, documenting how Analyser works and how we check it, so that knowledge doesnโ€™t live in one personโ€™s head.

What youโ€™ll do:

โ€ข Maintain and update the data that feeds Analyser, including regular refreshes, checks and corrections, while keeping close relationships with providers who submit their data to us

โ€ข Test changes before they go live, and run routine QA checks on outputs, including the calculations and business rules

โ€ข Keep and extend the test case library

โ€ข Handle first-line client and adviser queries, investigate anything that looks wrong and explain the answer clearly

โ€ข Provide system training and demonstrations to professional financial advisers once you are familiar with the software

โ€ข Log issues and requests, and work with our development firm to get them fixed and retested

โ€ข Document how things work and how checks are done

โ€ข Support the Head of Product (Analyser) with reporting and with ideas for improving the product

You donโ€™t need to know financial services already, though it helps. You do need to be someone who notices the thing everyone else walked past.

Itโ€™s a full-time role based at the lang catโ€™s offices in Leith, Edinburgh, with potential for some hybrid working once youโ€™re up and running.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

โ€ข Strong Excel: lookups, pivots, formulas and data checking. Weโ€™ll test this as part of the application.

โ€ข A methodical approach and a proven habit of spotting errors others miss.

โ€ข Comfort with numbers and logic-heavy rules. Advanced maths isnโ€™t needed.

โ€ข Clear written and spoken communication, especially explaining technical things to non-technical people and financial advisers.

โ€ข Comfort using AI tools as part of the job, and good judgement about what data goes into them. We do use AI to help us with some data analysis but we are very careful about how we go about it.

โ€ข Youโ€™ll be as comfortable working independently as with others.

USEFUL EXPERIENCE

None of these is required, but theyโ€™ll help:

โ€ข Experience in financial services, platforms, advice or fintech.

โ€ข Basic SQL, Power BI or Python.

โ€ข A background in QA, testing, data operations or a similar checking role.

โ€ข Some experience of working with a software supplier.

โ€ข Experience of providing software demonstrations and or training to others where you are a subject matter expert.

Weโ€™re committed to being open to talented candidates irrespective of your gender, race, faith, sexuality and physical ability. What we care about is your ability to do the job. Our office in Leith is wheelchair accessible. Weโ€™re also always keen to hear from โ€˜returnersโ€™ who are looking to re-enter the industry after a break.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

Our favourite candidates are:

โ€ข Accountable. If something in Analyser is wrong, youโ€™ll want to know, and youโ€™ll take responsibility for getting it fixed.

โ€ข Methodical. Youโ€™ll do the check the same way every time, and write it down so someone else can too.

โ€ข Flexible. Sometimes we need all hands on deck even if it isnโ€™t your usual day job. Weโ€™ll be flexible in return.

WORKING AT THE LANG CAT

What you get in return for your effort is a working life which is:

โ€ข Flexible. Lots of us have family and caring commitments outside work and weโ€™ll do our best with all of it for you too.

โ€ข Varied. Some days probably are the same, but not many.

โ€ข Supportive. No isnโ€™t a word youโ€™ll hear too often if you come up with stuff we should do either for ourselves or one of our clients.

โ€ข Challenging. We do push ourselves and we try to be honest with each other if something isnโ€™t up to scratch. But in a supportive way.

โ€ข Collegiate. The team is there for everyone. All you ever have to do is ask.

โ€ข Open. Everyone gets to find out how weโ€™re doing commercially and we discuss the big decisions.

WHATโ€™S THE PACKAGE?

This is a permanent role with a six-month probationary period. Salary will depend on experience and be based around the average for comparable roles in the Edinburgh market, with a range of between ยฃ30k and ยฃ40k.

Thereโ€™s a pension scheme (8% unconditional), a bonus scheme and 32 daysโ€™ holiday a year plus Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Yearโ€™s Day. After three months you will qualify for a death in service benefit of four times gross salary. We have an extended benefits policy which gives access to certain additional health and wellbeing services.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply, send your CV to hello@thelangcat.co.uk by 20 November with a short cover letter explaining why this role appeals and why you think youโ€™d be good at it. If we think you might be a good fit, weโ€™ll send you a short Excel checking exercise before we arrange an interview. Weโ€™ll be in touch by early December. Pro tip: donโ€™t use AI to write your letter. We can always tell. And take your time to research us before getting in touch.ย

You can also use hello@thelangcat.co.uk to ask us any questions before submitting a formal application.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

/ Six from you. Six from us.

There are six qualities we look for in everyone that joins the lang cat, and here they are:

Accountable โ€“ we donโ€™t do slopey shoulders. No space for it in a small business.

Curious โ€“ there is plenty we all donโ€™t know yet and the pursuit of it is always worthwhile.

Flexible โ€“ we all get our hands dirty at the lang cat. No-one is above any job.

Organised โ€“ you have to have to have to be able to organise yourself. Donโ€™t confuse our irreverent style with carelessness.

Creative โ€“ we know our stuff, but weโ€™re also able to spot insights, hooks, angles and different approaches which others might miss.

Collaborative โ€“ youโ€™ve got one of the industryโ€™s best teams at your disposal. We suggest you use it.

What you get in return is a working life which is:

Flexible โ€“ we do recognise thereโ€™s more to life than work.

Varied โ€“ some days probably are the same, but not many.

Supportive โ€“ โ€˜noโ€™ isnโ€™t a word youโ€™ll hear too often if you come up with stuff we should do either for ourselves or for one of our clients.

Challenging โ€“ we push ourselves and try to be honest with each other if something isnโ€™t up to scratch. But in a supportive way.

Collegiate โ€“ not sure thatโ€™s the right word, but the team is there for everyone. All you ever have to do is ask.

Open โ€“ everyone gets to find out how weโ€™re doing and we discuss the big decisions.

So, there you have it. Six from you, six from us.

The Impact of Poor Service

We provided the research for a report, in conjunction with Parmenion, which reveals how far short of expectations many adviser platforms are falling. The research found that over the last 12 months, 88% of advisers needed to apologise to at least one of their clients on behalf of a platform, and that poor service delivery from platforms impacts 91% of advisers every day.

Answering the Call

Service means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Itโ€™s so subjective it can be hard to put your finger on. This paper aims to challenge the status quo and inertia thatโ€™s built up in the sector for many years.
